A small group met at the Legend and George led the discussion on behalf of Steve ( whose book choice of The treasure of the Sierra Madre we were discussing). Group decision was that it was not a literary classic, though a good read that was unusual for featuring the poor and 'common' man as both hero and anti-hero.
George introduced his book choices for November.
We found it impossible to make a choice between two of the books - possibly because they continue to add layers to the themes of colonialism and of war which we have encountered frequently this year. Things fall apart' (colonialism though this time from the view point of a black African ), and the hugely emotive subject of ' Hiroshima' .
As a consequence, it was decided to read both books, but discuss them on seperate dates in the same month. This was a unanimous decision. Since there were relatively few of us in attendance, we have left the final dates of the meetings to be decided upon at the October book club meeting.
Please let George know if you require copies of these books.
